Theories of Crime and Justice – Writing Assignment 2
Due via D2L: November 21, 2018
According to Tibbetts (2018) a good criminological theory informs policy makers
about how to reduce crime (p. 25). Throughout the term, we discussed that our
understanding of why crime occurs should inform how we respond to crime. For
this assignment, you will use Hirschi’s social bonding theory as a framework to
analyze a criminal justice policy.
Provide an overview of Hirschi’s social bond theory. Identify and define the four
components of a social bond, and explain how social bonds impact crime according
to the theory.
Select one of the criminal justice policies from the list below. Research the policy
using the textbook and other available sources (e.g. academic journal articles,
periodicals, online sources, etc.) Thoroughly describe the policy. Identify the
rationale behind the policy, when the policy started, and where it was implemented.
Provide specific examples of the policy. Make sure to cite your sources.
Criminal Justice Policies (Select One)
1. Ban the box laws
2. Corrections-based vocational training programs
3. Decriminalization/legalization of marijuana
